An inquiry was held at Suva last week into j the stranding on a reef at the mouth of th»' Ha River of the Union Company's car fro ■ steamer Whang&pe. The Hon R. S. 0. Ban-' kino presided. The evidence showed that the pilot, Frederick Armstrong Williams, who had' charge of (he vessel at the- time of the 00, currence, misicook one set of beacons for Jtn* * other set, owing to the invisibility of the 1 beacons by reason of the strong sun, with which it was in line. There was no sign of any reef, as it was covered at, high tide. Thf water was perfectly calm. He turned at an angle precisely the same as he would hav® taken had he seen the Nasess beacon. Other expert witnesses affirmed the reasonableness of the pilot's action, and considered his mis* take to have been a natural one. The board found that the master (Captain J. D. Prow}had no reason to interfere in the navigation of the vessel, and that no blame could b« attached to him or any member of his crews that tho grounding was due to the pilot haw ing mistaken the beacon on Ma.'evu Patch for that oil Na-esc Cakau, and the mistake was caused by the invisibility of the beacon on the latter rec-f; the examination failed to disclose any damage to the vessel; all necessary and possible stops were taken after the grounding; and that a formal inquiry was neither 1 expedient nor requisite.
