ALLOWANCES INSUFFICIENT. PROTEST BY" COMMITTEES. Tli<« matter of school n'lnwancw was discussed at a meeting of the Canterbury School Cemmitteos' Association held in the rooms of the Young Men s Christian Assoeidf.on last ovoinn-Mr J. Peverii!, viec-ciiainnan of tho East Chi;.-.i.olmroh School Committee, presided, and representatives were present .from the following schools: —Shirley, Sunnier, St Albans, Tticcarton, Spreydon, Somer field, Addington, E'lmwoocl and Waltham.
Tho chairman, in referring to the qacstion ot incidental expenses, stated that at the present time tho email schools were working on a starvation basis, and- only tho larger schools were ablo to pay their way for their actual requirements. When it camo to tho matter ci ! repairs, etc., it was found that, under the new scale it would be next to impossible to do anythins;'. One item alone--tho caretaker's salary —absorbed' on tho average £'o'2 to £7O per annum at the present time, am! other necessities appertaining to the welfare of tho schools had gone up vexy appreciably since the war. It was ielt, therefore that some very vigorous protest shtfald bo made.
Tho representatives of the Somertiold Committee submitted a statement of tho committee's accounts for nine months, showing a deficit on present scnlo iimountinf; to £9 2s 3d, nlso inI eluding a liability of £S for s.-mifatioif, which the committeo was unable, to j meet, and bad to pass on to the boiVi'vi.
