Sir Douglas Haig reports We retain all the jsround gained oil Saturday. We have further extended our gains, and we easily stopped a counter-attack' north-east of Poziere*?. In the week's fighting wo inflicted severe defeats and heavy losses, and took the strongly defended localities'of Fall'emont Farm, Leuze Wood, Guiileniont and G'inehy despite the utmost efforts to retain them. The .spirit nnd dash of our troops in the sevore fighting and in the face of frequent, determined counter-attacks and constant intense artilleiiv fire were magnificent. The fine work of the IVisli from Connaughfc, Leinster and Minister has already been mantioned at Ginllemont. They continued the attack at Ginchy. The Warwickshire, Kents, Devonshires, Gloucestershire*, Surreys, CJormvalls, Welsh and Scottish were also engaged in all the week's fighting on the Somme, and they did splendid week.
