RANGATIRA'S CARGO.
AN INTERESTING POINT. [Pee. Pr.Ess Association.] DUNEDIN, August 23. Tho Chamber of Commerce further considered this morning the unique position that has arisen since tiro lauding of the wrecked Rougatira's cargo at'Dunedin, per the Y.'a'iworn, iu widen the shipping company seeks to collect a levy (salvage charges) from the consignees amounting to 50 per cent on the value of the goods landed, instead of as usual upon the invoico value of the freight "plus 10 per cent. Tho importers hero hold that a marine insurance policy is an absaluto indemnity to the amount of the face value, an dthat all charges the consignee might be compelled to pay to get possession ol goods are payable by. the company to the amount of the policy. \ The insurance companies maintain that importers joined with them to tho extent of tho increased value of the goods so far as salvage charges are concerned, and tho chief point it whether tho consignee has to become tho joint insurer for the difference in value. Tho Chamber will issue a manifesto later based on a legal opinion.
