OBITUARY.
MRS E. W. CIMNGTON. Yesterday morning Mrs E. W. Cunuington, well known throughout tho Dominion, and Canterbury particularly, for her philanthropic, work, passed awny at her residence, Vacation House, Esplanade, Sumner. Mrs Cunnington was born in Wales in 1849, and was the youngest of twelve daughters of the late Mr Valentino Loach, of Devizes, Wilts. She received a generous education at King's College, and arrived in New Zealand in 1575. _ln following year she was married in Christchurch to Mr Cabe! Baines, and for some years after tho family lived in South 'Australia. Mr Baines died during a visit to England, and iu 1883 his widow returned to New Zealand, where sho subsequently married Mr Her-
Bert James Cunnington and settled in Christchurch. During recent years Mr and Mrs Cunnington lived in Sumner, where, in November, 1915, Mr Cunnington died. For some years Mrs Cunnington closely identified herself with the work of social reform. She read very widely and held modern views on numerous subjects, which she never hesitated to discuss publicly. She was the author of many pamphlets and frequently gave public addresses to interested bodies. For many years she was lady visitor to the gaol, and strove very earnestly to secure reformative treatment for fallen women. She worked hard for the passing of tho Infant* Life Protection Act, and for prison reform, at the same time very real interest in all rescue work. Quite recently she made earnest appeals on the social and only a few days ago communicated with the. Hon G. W. Russell on the matter of training women for police duties. She leaves three children, Mrs W. G. Roberts and Miss Freda M. Cunnington, of Sumner, and Mr A. Baines, of South Africa.
