, / Ou» CoaMSPON'DBOT.J* Cable advice waa received early in • the. week by *Mr James Boyd (county chairman) oi the death of iris mother in Ireland. The deceased lady, who had reached; the ripe age of eighty-five years, is.survived by three brothers in - kaikoura, Messrs David Boyd (aged eighty-three), Thomas Boyd and buy Boyd, also by four sons, Messrs John, James, Alexander and David, jun. The Boyds constitute the largest "clan," numerically, in Kaikoura. The word"<;lan" is appropriate in the case of this family, ior, while hailing immedi- • ately from Ireland, it is of Scottish descent.. . '

V The latest reports of Trooper Thomas Curtain (wounded with the Anzacs) is :i - of' '.a more satisfactiry nature. ' ■ *** ' "Mr David - Boyd, sen., of Carrick Finn farm, has been resident here for, roundly, fifty years. His health has been very. indifferent for some time, and an operation of a serious nature for one'of his ears is contemplated. f- . .V

Mr A. M'Kenzie has purchased font fine bulls from the Brookdale herd, two twenty-four and two pighteen months old. They are regarded" by experts as superior to any amtoals- of their class in this country.

;= Parents of children attending the "'/ District High School arid the commit-, s" tee are very pleased with the decision of f the Education Board to continue t»u secondary department. Miss Reynolds, ; who has been appointed to succeed Miss Mayne, commenced duty on Monday.

The technical classes in connection with the District High School are fairly well att%.ded. Mrs A. Collins (sewing) jhnd Miss Flower (cookery) each "have a dozen or more pupils, while Mr John Collins's woodwork class has a varying attendance of from six to nine.

Kaikoura was visited this week for the first time by one of North Marlborough's foremost citizens. _ Though resident in the provincial district for well nigh fifty years—forty-eight, to be exact—Mr J. Allison Lambert had not previously been here, and ho now regrets having so long deferred making him3elf acquainted with this beautiful and fertile portion of the Marlborough provincial area. Mr Lambert, who arrived from England when ho was twenty-three years old, has made an enviable namo for himself as one of the . best wool experts in the Dominion. Ho was the examiner on the occasion when Ernest Rutherford (now* Professor Sir .Ernest Rutherford) gained his first rung on the ladder of fame bv winning a Tinline scholarship against all : the pupils of Nelson and Marlborough 'at that time. Mr Lambert was much . Impressed with the very marked zeal, I Ippligation and thoroughness of the young Belorus Sound boy, and • pre- ' dieted a distinguished career for him.

! By tho way Mr Lambert was ono of 'a party who first discovered gold at ' Onamahitu, some eighteen miles from Blenheim. They accidentally found gold under a log in the stream, getting about £7O worth. A rush set in, but it proved, generally, n "duffer," and the disappointed miners thought the "find" was a "fake" got up by ono of Mr Lambert's mates, who had a •mall store nearby. The miners talked of "taking it out of" tho storekeeper "--'(a Mr Warner), who heard of their designs upon him: and decided to confront them. Ho took a rifle with him, and threatened to fire on the first man . attested to molest him. His

resolute attitude overawed them, and they refrained from violence. The place became known, and is still called, " The Rifleman."
