Mr iSTERI'L STATEMENT. 1 (Special to the " Star.") WELLINGTON, June 21. A suggestion from Mr Dickie that lw will take into favourable consideration t'r,e matter of increasing the payment for tho \ boarding and up-keep of Government. chldren at registered homes from 8s per week to 10s, owing to the increased cost of living, drew t!ie following reply from the Minister of Education. '' There are at present approximately twelve hundred children boarded out ( „by the Department, involving an expenditure of over £'23,000. As recently as 1913 an increase was made in the rates for these children. Tho payments now made vary from 8s to 10s per -.reek, according to the ajres of the children, and are considered sufficient. Where special attention is necessary these rates are further increased according to the circumstances' of each individual case. It should be noted that the payments'are regular, and before any child is boarded out. a substantial outfit is provided by tho Department. In addition, medical attention and medicines are "provided free of cost by the Government for these children.'"
