OBITUARY.
j MR WALTER HANNAY. Tho ileaih of Mr Wu'.tor Hannay, who was well known in r::ihvay and shipping circles, occurred suddenly at his residence, in Hawkesbnry Avenue, St Albans, yesterday morning.. Mr Hannay was born in .England, and wen* to sea at an early age. He was for some time sailing out of Chicago in American ships on the Great Lakes, and later Was engaged ns a collector of shipping tolls on tho River Hudson in Now York. Mr Hannay also served in the Peruvian Navy, in which he was a lieutenant. He remained in Australia for some time before he settled down in New Zealand. Entering the railway service in New Zealand many years ago he soon rose to the rank of stationmaster. and ho served several years in this capacity both at tho Bluff and at Greymout.h. He was finally transferred to Lyttelton, where ho saw about thirteen years' service. Ho retired on superannuation, in 1912, and in the following year he and his wife madoa, visit to Britain and the Continent. Mr Hannay was seventy years of age, and leaves a widow, one son and four daughters. His son is now serving at tho front in France.
