■The tender of Messrs Carey for the supply of blankets has been accepted by the Mayor's Coal and Blanket Fund Committee. A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that the Patriotic Society yesterday held a special church parade at the Town Hall, in which soldiers from Trentham and Featherston, Territorials, National Reservists and others, participated. Many hundreds who wcro unable to gain admission were addressed by Mr Massey in the open air. In the present circumstances, with the cost of living growing higher almost daily, the kitchen garden, beloved of the suburbanite, is becoming less of a hobby than a valuable money-saver. Lecturing before the Workers' Educational Association on Saturday evening, Mr W. Wickens, the city gardener, gave his hearers a great deal of practical advice on the best methods of cultivating vegetables, and the lecture was listened to very attentively. At the meeting of the Canterbury Fruitgrowers' Association on Saturday night, Mr J. Longton drew attention to the enlistment of Mr W. J. Courtier. Government Orchard Expert. He said thai there were many single men in the service who had not yet gone, and ho thought that they should go before Mr Courtier, as at present he could be ill spared.
