SIXTEENTH REINFORCEMENTS SHORTAGE IN INFANTRY. DEPARTURE ON WEDNESDAY. Unless tho unexpected happens in this hour of need, it is cortan that Canterbury's quota for the Sixteenth Reinforcements, due at Treutham on Thursday next, will be deficient in infantry. Cbristehurch was wanting fifty-eight more infantry at in id day today to complete the quota for the Sixteenths, and as many others as possible to fill the deficiency still existing m the Fifteenth Reinforcements. ft is understood that the North Canterbury (Kainpoi) and Ti.maru district quotas will be secured, but prospects of similar success in the West Coast and Nelson areas are regarded as hopeless. Thus the shortage for Canterbury as a whole is likely to be. pronounced. Appeals to men who have volunteered for branches other than infantry to transfer have not been fruitful, most of these men remaining ' obdurate even when it is officially pointed out to them that they stand no nope of being called up for many months. Far from this fact being an inducement, to transfer, it is taken by many as an argument not to. Military officials wonder whether these men really wish to go to the front. Meanwhile, they are securing the badges .proclaiming to all that thev *' arc waiting to bo called up!" The North Canterbury quotas for tho Sixteenth will leave Ohristcluirc.h on Tuesday evening, and the Christehurch and South Canterbury quotis on Wednesday evening. tho Christcluirch onotn. is:—

Total . . . .162 All branches are full excepting infantry. The men will parade at the King Edward Barracks on Wednesday at 6 p.m.. and the subsequent proceedings will be on similar lines as prevailed when earlier reinforcements were dispatched. Others who will leave with the draft include- Christchurch's quota of noncoms, for the Eighteenth "Reinforcements, consisting of ten infantry, mm mounted and one artillery. This quota is complete. —■' "-I NELSON'SJVOLUNTEERS. [Pee Press Association.] NELSON, May 1. The complete draft of sixty men for the 16th Reinforcements will leave tomorrow. The lists are well filled up to and including the '2oth Reinforcements. Speaking at Nelson recently the Minister of Defence congratulated the district on its response. Mr Robert Allan, a well-known lead-, ing business man, who recently rotired, although < over the age limit offered his services in any capacity, and said he did not want, pay, in fact, he would pay his own expenses. Mr Allan, who has done much exploration work in Borneo and in the South Seas, has been notified that his services have been accepted. DUNEDIN'S POSITION. SUCCESS OF CANVASS. [Per Press Association.] DTJNEDIN, May 1. The city recruiting campaign, which opened on March 21, has finished, and the committee disbanded to-day. The city was divided into nineteen blocks, each block being in charge of a sectional committee, who invit<-d men to attend at the rooms and fill in cards. The results show that 85 per cent acceded to this request, and only 20 per cent had to be personally canvassed at thtir houses, while 6 per cent are not accounted for. Throughout the campaign recruiting has been brisk, an average of -12 men coming in for medical examination nightly. The position in Duncdin regarding recruiting is good, but the Mayor (Mr Clark) points out that the comitry districts are leaning heavily on the city, as Duncdin has never yet been actually short in its quota.
