Before the Meat Commission several butchers gave evidence to the effect that despite the high retail prices ruling, they were carrying on business at a. loss, partly dua to the scarcity of stock as a result of the drought. They urged that if prices were fixed it should be upon the wholesale and not upon the retail dealers. Thsy also favoured ihe grading of meat. COLLIERIES IDLE (Received April 11. 10 a.m.) SIDNEY, April 11. Eight Newcastle district collieries are idle, and others are working on an average only half time.
