FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The City Council met last night; pre-sont-tho Mayor (Mr H. Holland) and Councillors J. M'Combs., M.P., J. R. Hayward. J. Reynolds, 3>. G. Sullivan, J. M'Coullough, W. Millar, F. Burgoyne, A. Williams, E. Peek, J- W. Beanland, J. O. Jameson, H.J. Otley, A. S. Taylor and H. F. Herbert. NO GOOD FRIDAY CONCERTS. Applications were received for mission to give entertainments on Good Friday night in the Opera House, His 'Majesty's- Theatre, Globe Theatre an J Empire Theatre. The application in respect to tho Opera House offered a hat ofTtho proceeds for the Patriotic Fund. Councillor Williams moved that all the amplications should be granted on condition that the net proceeds snould be;' given to tba fund. . . I Councillor M'Cullough sauhthat at, .a | previous meeting the council had de-rm-ted from its custom by giving permission for a concert, and he would vote that all the applications should be granted. , , ~ , .i „ Councillor Hayward moved that tho applications should be refused, remarking that it was unchristian ■ to allow anvbodv to make money out of Crood Friday; and the permission given fo a sacred concert.for tho Patriotic Fun I was a different matter. , Councillor M'Combs, in seconding thj motion, said that he was opposed[even to .the ,acred concert whjch was meiely another way of shielding the men-t from doing what it ought to do Mwn&D. G. Sullivan said that the picture employees had beenjubilant when the council had refused permission for Christmas anJ they should be considered. Permission was refused. ELECTRICITY. The Electric Light and Power Committee reported that it had been able to purchase transformers necessary or St Martins and Opawa .for £132, plus £ls for switch. The engineer was making a trial, of sending a representative round among the consumers solicit mo orders for supplies and explaining the operation of various domestic apparatus. A sub-committea had been appointed to report on the financial and other relations of the destructor and baths to the electrical department. The report was adopted. WORKS .-.COMMITTEE, ...... The Works Committee reported that the sum of £l5O was realised by the sale of the stone crusher. A deputation of ratepayers from Cooper's Road, St Albans, had waited on the committee and offered to give the land necessary for widening Cooper's Road to St Albans Street free of cost. The committee recommended that " the offer should bo accepted provided the land were given free of all costs, including survey, transfer and the setting bade of the fences. Mr F. W. Freeman, on behalf of Messrs Partridge and Watson, had applied for permission to extend Rliona Street to Worcester' Street, and the committee recommended that the application should be granted subject to the street being formed in accordance with the by-laws and to the satisfaction of the city surveyor. The report was adopted." MISCELLANEOUS The Hinemoa' Ladies' Swimming Cluh' wrote'asking that the council should, forgo the_ fee of £3 for tho baths on the occasion of tho club's patriotic swimming carnival. " The application was granted. The tender of Whitcombe and Tombs at £lB 7s od was accepted for printing the rate books. The council adjourned till April 26.
