WATERED GARDENS

BUT DID NOT HAVE METERS CITY COUNCIL PROSECUTIONS. Amateurs gardeners wlio "had used tho city water supply ou their lawns and flowers without having had a meter attached to their installations, appeared before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., at tho Police Court to-day. The evidence for tho defence set up tho plea that meters had hee napplied for but had not been supplied by tho City Council. Mr Loughnan appeared on behalf of tho City Council. The first cases taken were against Frederick W. Woodward (Mr Alpers 1 ) and Edward W. Amos (Mr Weston). They pleaded not guilty. It was shown by the evidence that both defendants had applied for water meters for the extra supply of water required for the gardens, but owing to the City Council having no meters available nouo had been put in. ' Water-Inspector James said that the Council had about 150 applications for water meters, but there was no rneterrf in Stock, and owing to the war, there was difficulty in getting a further supply. Mr Bailey said that there was sonic excuse for people who had applied for meters. _ , ' . ' Mr Alpers criticised tho actjon of tjie City Council in' issuing summonses against residents who had sent in their applications and had signed the "necessary contract, but had not been slipplied with meters. Both defendants were convicted and ordered to pay solicitor's costs, 10s 6d each. On similar charges Ralph Budge was convicted and ordered to pay 10s 6d costs ; E. J. Spvosen was fined 40s 'With costs; Oha,rles OhurclTiil was fined 40s with costs; Arthur Calvert, 40s with costs; John E. Hood, 40s with costs; E.. J. Stiirgess was convicted' and discharged ; thigh O. Oakes was convicted and'ordered to pay costs 10s 6cl■; W. J. Henry was fined 40s with costs; Alfred Butcher, 40s with costs; H. 11. T. Spanger .tvas convicted and ordered to pay costs 7s; Charles Leeining w-as convicted and ordered to pav coses I7s 6d.; Beverley Grange was fined 40s with costs; Ellen Maud Wilcox, convicted and . discharged. The charge against A. E. Humes was dismissed.
