INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION.
PROPOSALS AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE. The general committee of the Industrial Association of Canterbury met last evening; present—Mr J. B. Laurenson (chairman), Miss Tabart and Messrs C. B. Cogan, J. Black, A. F. Drayton, W. W. Charters, J. A. Frostick", H. Best, J. Gamble, O. Von Sierakowski, Buchanan, and H. F. Allen (secretary). The business was to discuss arrangements for the annual conference of the Industrial Corporation of New Zealand to he held in Christehurch on Tuesday, January 18, and the following days. The chairman stated that Auckland and Wellington were expected to send four or live delegates cacti, and rue outlying districts would be represented. Otago had not been invited to send delegates, as Duuedin was outside the association. It was agreed that the Canterbury delegates should number five and the chairman. Messrs J. BlacK. W. W. Charters. A. "W. Beavcn, C B. Cogan and J. R. Hcywood' were nominated and elected. REMITS. The following arc the remits already sent in for consideration at the conference by the respective districts: — Auckland District. (1) Proposal of the Auckland Provincial Industrial Association to affiliate with the Auckland Empire Trade League. (2) That the corporation endeavour to arrange for a collection of British and Continental goods (on the lines of a recent British trade exhibit) for exhibition in the chief centres of the Dominion, say in the windows of largo ■shops. (3) The establishment of new industries by utilisation of latent wealth. (4) that there should' be no reduction in the legalised hours of labour during the ivar. (5) That the corporation approach the Government with a view to the alteration of the methods whereby permits are now granted to men who are unable to command the minimum wage as awards-.:! in the various trades by the Arbitration Court, and that in lieu of the present method of referring the matter to the union secretary and Labour Department, the old permit boards, which have been abolished, should* be re-established during the period of the war. for the purpose of considering the claims of men, and especially of returned soldiers, wno may in a measure be incapacitated and unable to command the mimmiim wage. (6) The proposal to restrict the employment of apprentices in the engineering and boiler trades, with a suggestion that the findings of the corporation be presented to the Government by deputation. (7) Further consideration of proposals for the establishment and' subsidising of the iron industry in New Zealand, with especial relation to the manufacture of munitions. (8) Afforestation. Canterbury District.
(1) A New Zealand brand on New Zealand manufactures. (2) Tarawiki ironworks. (3) That the corporation consider the ndvi*'ibleness of holding an exhibition in celebration of the declaration of peace with a view of:—(al Promoting Dominion industries; (b) educating the public against goods made by enemy countries", aud' in favour of those made in British dominions or by our Allies. (4) That the conference endorse the present movement in favour of an Empire trad© conference. Wellington District. (1) That the Industrial Corporation of New Zealand impress upon the Government the necessity of prohibiting the importations of goods from enemies' countries after the war. as now. (2) Employment for returning soldiers maimed through the war. It v»-as agreed to take consideration of tho above remits in committee.
