A Wellington commercial traveller said to a reporter at Napier : " Since the war broke out our business has increased at least 50 per cent.'' 5 _ The man who made the statement is the representative of one of the leading motor importing firms in Wellington. He said he had never known money to be so plentiful in Hawke's Bay before, and instead of the war interfering detrimentally with his business it had, on the contrary, benefited it. In a brief conversation with a military officer from tho Far North, a, representative of the Whangarei " Advocate " found that recruiting in the North Auckland district had been very satisfactory. Taking the area from Mangonui to Herekino and north of those centres, the response of volunteers has been excellent. As a matter of fact, Houhora and other towns in the north have practically come to the end of their recruiting possibilities. The officer in question, wiio was recently conducting a recruiting campaign, said at a small meeting held at Wailiarara (a small settlement) no fewer than thirteen recruits came forward. It is interesting to note that on the same night a recruiting meeting was held in Dunedin, where the people were addressed by accomplished orators, and three bands were in attendance, but, notwithstanding all tho persuasion, only three or four volunteers offered their sen-ices. Somo thirty or forty men have already enlisted' from tho Wireless Guard at Kaitaia, and the Maoris have also responded satisfactorily throughout the far north.
