TO-DAY'S CASE Mr If. W. Bishop, S.iCT., prcsfdcd afc to-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. DRUNKENNESS. Two first offenders pleaded guilty to charges of having been found drunk and were each lined ss, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment. Another first offender, an elderly man, was charged with drunkenness at Bealoy Flat on December 16. Sub-In-spector liastio said that the defendant fell off the coach at .Be a ley Flat and had to bo brought to Christchurch and taken to the Hospital, where ho had been for the past week. The expenses totalled £2 12s 6d, but defendant had no money.

Defendant was ordered to pay £2 12s 6d, in default fourteen days' imprisonment. He was meanwhile handed over to the ca.ro of the Court missionary. Thornton Newsome pleaded guilty to having been fcfuncl drunk in Office Road, Merivale. Mr Bishop: I cannot understand a man liko you, enjoying a large income, making a beast of yourself. You will be fined ss, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment, and I shall issue a prohibition order against yon, to take effect- for twelve months. THEFT AT DRAPER'S. Elizabeth Emily Orchard, a respectably dressed woman, was charged with stealing on December 22 one pair of socks and one pair of gloves, of a total value of lis l|d, the property of T. Armstrong and Co., Limited. Mr Cassidy, who appeared on behalf , of the accused, said that she would , plead guilty. Sho had gone to ArmI strong's to make some purchases and had succumbed to a suddca temptation and taken the articles. She was followed and returned them immediately. Her husband was a very respectable man. Mr Bishop: Just an ordinary case of shop-lifting. This offence is getting too frequent, and 1 must nut it down. Th ese women seem to think that they can thieve with impunity and then come to Court and tell anv plausible tale. Accused will be fined £5, in default oiio month's imprisonment.
