The C.D.C. headquarters are be-oom- j ing quite a popular resort for returned ; soldiers ancf men on leave from the training camps. This is just what the executive officers like to see, and if tlw C.D.C. has not been responsible for anything more than providing a, comfortable club room for those who have fought for us vi* those who arc going l to light for us their efforts have not been in vai:i. But the C.D.C. has done more than this, for it has sub-commit-tees hard at work to provide, for every contingency that may arise in dealing particularly with our returned and. re- j turning soldiers. V Tlie C.D.O- recruiting bureau hasbeen the fcceue of renewed activity during the past week, and applications for enrolment have been fa rly numerous. There ia no doubt but that when the date of- the departure of the next Reinforcements is definitely decided thero will be a rush for places. Up to date no less than 1300 names have been registered at the bureau since its inception, and this is a record of which those who enlisted and the C.D.C. may well feel proud. A word just here will j not be out' of place in the way of congratulating those members of the C.D.C. who are keening the office open throughout the day and mo;ht.. It heeds a certain amount of self-sacrifice, but those who are assisting give their 4 services ungrudgingly, and they feelthat though not elfg ; ble for tho firing line they are doing whatever is within their nower to further the interests of , the Empire. • ' The following interesting notes have , been supplied by a patriot'.c member of ! the No. 7 (Linwood) Un't of the C.D.C.. 1 and I prefer to give them as written sooner than spoil their delightful " piquancy and the enthusiastic spirit that runs through them. My respected correspondent says:—" Evev since tho t inauguration of the Lmwood Unit its. I members have been keen on miniaturo , riflo shooting. In tho matter of indoor ranges the men have been well catered ■ for and have availed themselves of . every opportunity to learn tho most important part of the work of a soldier „ that of be'ng able to hit the mark. The unit has so far been very sue- ' oessful, and with tho aid of several experienced shooting men in the ranks * 'they now have a considerable number of very good and shots. Ihe un : t has two indoor ranges, thanks for I which are due to the Lmwood OddI fellows and also the Tramway Board] teams, who have given the use of their " ranges. Last Saturday afternoon an II open-air range, full size of 25yds. was opened, making now three available f centres on which shooting can be carl ried out. The site of the new range u is in Tanored Street, just over Lin- " wood Avenue, and is situated ,in a u paddock kindly placed at tho disposal of tho unit by Mr Danks. Tho iro»i ® scieens and markers' huts were alsos presented' to the corps through tho 1 agency of Sergeant. Clarke. The.tim- " ber used was donated by Mr Otley, and ' the wind wresns- by Messrs Bradley „ »Bros. To all the&e donors the unit is j much indebted, and wishes to express 5 iti thanks. Mr H. H. Smith, Town a Clerk, and Mr Dobsovi, City Surveyor, have rendered all the assisti'.nce they ' could in. the laying out of the work, i- and unit Ls much indobted these gentlemen fur tho live interest they , took in bringing the project to- a suecessful issue. The range is absolutely. q safe as far as the public are concerned. v Provision has been made for using four 'f targets, and when the evonings lengthen it is expected the range will ]" be 'used to its fi'Jl capacity. At the opeir'ng otv Saturday tho first shot was v by Captain A. C. Maxv, r e|l, who received the congratulations of tnose * present when the marker's disc showed. a bull's-eje. Captain Maxwell mnde. a few appropriate remarks and declared tho range open. # With regard to the shooting ments of the Linwood unit tor the next S\ i to a L'nwood team firing a mate 1 r | acra : nst Sumner next Wednesday, there . will he no shooting on the tramway j range en Tuesday west. Ihe second shoot of the unit in connection with 1 the first competition wil 1 bo continued r " in the Ttollesiori Street Hall on Friday eveninc. A set of b'.e.Telo cov'ers hits s '" been presented to the unit by a promiit nent rubber firm, and will be shot for "! on the outside range. I n » II , • Something m the nature of a rei cord has been put up by the Linwood ? unit, so far as parade's are- concerned'. j The men paraded from Sunday to Sun- - day no Jess than four times, and there > were first-cla&s musters on each occa- . sion. So pleased was Captain A. C. i Maxwell with the hearty response to 1 the call s<> frequently, that at last , Sunday morning's parade he briefly ad. >r dressed the men, and congratulated > them upon the really live interest they . were taking in the C..D.C. and their | own particular unit.
