RACING AND TROTTING.

NOTES BY "ARGUS/' ffiTURES. \ SeptamW S—Dt»nv-t-virl:o Racing Club. September 9—Dsmuevirke Hunt. i?»ftfttnber 9, 10—Ashburtou County Racias Club. •• i-"> 1 =—Jockey Club. September 18 —Otago Hnat. September 23 21—Geia'dine "Racinq; Club. |rpt«mber 23, 23—W#ii-»"ui .!••><*<•>• Cl«b. /ftptember '27, 28—Otaki Maori Racing Club. [ September 30—Kurow Jockey Club. September 30—Horowheuua Racing Club. Tib© field which contested tho Mar- \ ton Handioap yesterday was not par- ; ticularly strong, but. the winner, Forj tify, was responsible for an attractive j perforinatioe. He competed in sprint ' events last season, showing smart form in hack company, while at the recent Grand National meeting at Riccarton ih© created a favourable impression liy his success in the Islington Handicap, in Which he was followed home by Glenroy and Encore. He finished well in that race, and he looks like making a useful stayer. His sire. Foremost, •is a half-brother to Cruciform and Formosan, being by Phoebus Apollo— Forme, while his dam is by Day star, by Castor from Trenton's sister, Cissy. Phcebus Apollo, who was an imported horse by St Simon—Polynesia, died after a short stud career in Auckland. Few of his descendants did much in New Zealand, some of them proving untrainable, on account of unsoundness, but Apologue credited him with a Melbourne Cup, while Prophecy, a half-sister to wa© one of the best performers in Western Australia in her day. The reault of the Railway Handicap at Marton yesterday would not be very palatable to early backers, as Crown Pearl, who finished second, and Shaki, who was, unplaced, were freely supported in doubles from the _ time the weights appeared. The winner, Mia Cara, is a four-year-old mare by Boniform—Cariasima, by San Fran—ivietinite, by Nordenfeldt—Pearl Ash. She >. has not done much racing and her only . other success was gained at the spring . meeting of the Wellington Racing Club last October, when she beat a moderate ' field in the Spring Trial Stakes. ■ Hydrufi, winner of the Maiden Hack Race at Marton yesterday, is a three-year-old brother to Shaki, by Hymet•fcus>—Balama, by . Birkenhead —Malurx, an Australian-bred mare by Malua— Noma. Balama is a half-sister to Tournament', the dam of Rencontre, so that Hyd'rus comes from a speedy family. This was his first appearance, but he has been spoken cf for some time_ as a very promising galloper. Ho claims an engagement in the Wanganur Guineas, in which he will meet sotue of the be«t of his age, so that a good lino to his ability as a galloper should soon be available. The-Maiden Plate at Marton has frequently served to bring under liotioe horses, which subsequently played a prominent part in important events. ' Four years ago it was won by Vega, who did not turn out well, but she was followed- borne by Labour Day and Crown Pearl, two first class performers. St Serf, the nest winner,' was also a moderate, but Postillion, who finished second, turned out a brilliant sprinter. Bonny Helen won two years ago. with Rewi Poto second, these two being both good class horses later in their careers. Last year's winner was Kaminohe, who afterwards developed - decent form. Hydras, who was Successful this week, is therefore in good company, and he h«a a . big task if he is to live up to the form shown by some of those who have taken part in the race. Moutoa Queen, who finished second to Hydrus in the Maiden Hack Plate at Marton yesterday, is a three-year-old filly by Charlemagne 11., from the imported mare* Strega, by Orvieto— St Mildred, by St Simon. Strosa wai purchased in England by the late Mr G. G. Stead, but she has proved a great failure, none of her stock having turned out well. Her record is in great contrast to that of the other mares who came out at the same time, Otterdeu having made a, great nam© as the dam of Mar turn and Boniform, while Saucer produced one first class performer in the shape of Porcelain. Toreador, who won the Hack Hurdle Handicap at Marton yesterday, is only a novioe at the jumping game. He competed twice in hack hurdle events at the winter meeting at Wanganui in May, but failed to make any show. He j has probably ■ improved with the I •chooliilg lie has since had, however, and if he takes kindly to jumping he may turn out well, us he possesses plenty of speed. He commenced racing as a four-vear-old. at which age he won five races out of seven starts, proving himself a particularly brilliant sprinter. Toreador is by Spaipwn. who has been very prominent as a sire lately, several of his descendants having shown auiarc. form. Acceptances for the Xew Zealand Cup will close to-morrow night, at nine o'clock. Acceptances for the handicaps on the first day of the Ashburton County Racing Club's meeting and entries for the Trial Plate and Maiden Hack Race vril] close to-morrow night, at nine o'clock. It is reported that the trotting stallion, Wild Palm, by Wildwood—Palm Bell, been sold by Mr P. Mitten, of Temuka, to Mr G. Gardiner, a North Island breeder, for 150 guineas. The outside of the trial grass track at Riccarton was open this morning and was freely used by the trainers for fast work. The rain Earlier in the week had made it heavy and as a result the times were only moderate. Battle Ere and Adjutant were companions m a mile spin, which was covered in lmin 49 2-ssec, with Battle Eve going on rather better than l'icompanion at the end. St Ewe and Countess Tolstoi, separately. ran six furlongs in lmin i'lsec, both finishing well. Specialform. who is gradually coming to band, beat Don Char! over half a mile in .53 4-osec, while Count Martial and Gowanbrae did a similar task in lmin 7 2-ssec-Ardeuvhor hit out freely over im" furlongs, in which he defeated Pyjaina. in lmin 7 S-Sseo. Snub and Snapdragon ran n utile in company, the List seven furlongs taking lmin 3 t isee J with both going on w*4l. Cervulus and Fiery Cross took lmin 7 2-t<seo over five furlongs, the . pair moving comfortably at th* fimsu. Vown and Peg covered she furlong? i» Iniin .20 3-ssec, fi.nis ? -ing toge/. J .uo, otga Caridvna ran half a raiie in 53s«eo, Fender taking 52 3-oseo, while Petrosus followed with a similar task in 51 3-ss«'. Warstep and Chrysotia showed, to advantage over a mile, which they left fchind in lmin 46 3-ssec. iscoixli Melody ran a mile by hers>eU

in lmin 50sec, but Ahe was tiring at the «nd. Downsteepy after giving Treadfiro a start, ran iiv© furlongs in lmin ( 1-ssee, his companion taking Imm » 2-ssec:. Free and Snow raker covered five furlongs in lmin 6seo, Free's effort being very attractive, ns she was carrying a j big weight. I Reveller splinted half a mile in 51 . 3-osec, finishing well. First Glance : atari**- with tins, !r«t- she dropped out j ovt" ladfe bit. taking oosoo for the jourc*y. j Kin l7 Star and a companion ran half a mile°in 52 3-ssec, moving along nicely. R. J. Mason will leave to-night for j Wanganui, with Banksia, Bimeter, Nones and Xanthos. E. Scoullar has recommissioued Martuk, by Martian—Ukraine, after a lengthy spell, and will get her ready for spring engagements. Three New Zealand Cup candidates were racing at Marton yesterday, Bronk Delaval being third ui the Maiden Plate, while Prince Laddo and Tangihou were unplaced in their events. They will all have to improve a lot to be worth considering at Riccarton. ,| Mr A. Boyle has sent his imported mare Flower of the West, by Arizona —Flowerer, to Melbourne, whore she will be mated with The Welkin. Wi h ordinary luck, something good sh ™ llrt result, as everything sired by The Welkin seems ab'.e to gallop fast. At the Rosebery pony meeting, Sydney," last month, the Fourteen Hands Handicap was won by Rose Soult, by Soult —Gladys Rose. The Victorian trainer, J. Soobie, has made a good start for the season m classic races. He made the trip to j Adelaide for the spring meeting ot the Adelaide Racing Club, with the result that ho captured the Adelaide Guineas for three-year-olds, with Les- i bos, and the Fulharn Park Plate, for j two-year-olds, with Sister Satellite, j They are both by the imported sire The Welkin, whose stock are turning out high class as early sprinters; they have yet to demonstrate that they can stay. Lesbos was a, smart two-year-old last season. Her dam, Cleis, is a half-sister to the Derby winner, Beragoon, being by Wallace—Wi gel mar, a sister to Merriwee, by Bill of r*orti«nd —Etraweenie, by Trenton. The two-vear-old winner. Sister Satellite, is a sister to Welkin Queen, a crack two yeor-rokl in Western Australia last season. W T i!ga, tho dam of Sister Satellite, is an imported mare by Marco, a son of Barcaldine. The value of Barcaldine mares has been recognised tor some time. Tho few that have come to tliis part of the world have all done well. Bonnie Rosette is the dam of Mountain King, sire of Mr E. J. Watt's colt, Mountain Knight; Oratava is the dam of La Carabine, a great race mare; while Eleusis has gained fame in Now Zealand through the progeny of her daughters, Elusive, j Delusive and Rumour. The meetings being held in Sydney are becoming of interest now, owing to the approach of the spring meeting of the Australian Jockey Club. At Rosehill last month, the Maiden Plate was won by the three-year-old Gringo, who accomplished his tas'k in such an attractive manner that he is now being freely discussed as a candidate for Derby honours. Gringo, who is raced by the veteran trainer, T. Pay ten, is by Varco from the New Zealand-bred mare Windgun, by Royal Artillery— Whirlwind, by Stepniak from the Dunedin Cup winner, Tempest. Whirlwind was raced by Mr J. F. Buchanan, and he bred Windgun, who was only a moderate performer. She did not do much racing and Gringo is her first foal. AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB.
