AMERICAN DEFENCE.
THE AGITATION FCR LARGER ARMAMENTS.
MR GARDNER'S VIEWS.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received December 19, 12.35 p.m.) WASHINGTON, December 18.
Giving evidence before the House Committee, Mr Gardner, the loader of the agitation in favour of a larger American Navy, said that many American ships were actually in cold'storage, being useless without considerable repairs. The Navy was short by 18,000 men. and a shortage of 40,000 is anticipated. Instead of forty-seven battleships America had only twentyseven, while instead of 187 destroyers ithad only sixty-eight. Rear-Admiral Fletcher, ho considered, was entirely wrong in saying that the United State.-' fleet was equal to that of Germany. The fact was that the United States had the third of the- world's navies.
