FOR THE SICK.
BOOKS AT THE HOSPITAL
MRS FOMIN'S WORK.
For thirteen years Mrs J. H. fountain, with the. help of Mr Fountain, has kept a library supplied at the Ohristehurcb Hospital for the benefit of the patients. Mrs iountami will leave Christehurch soon, and she is making an appeal through the Star to th* ladies of the cty to maintain the institution. • . Speaking of this work to-day, she said that thirteen years ago. she,, at the request.of a friend, visited an old seafaring man at the Hospital. She took him two books. On her next visit she found that he had read the books and had passed them on to two other patients. She "took two more, books, and then sent a large number, and, ever since., she has seen that each bed had its supply of books. The library now numbers about 400 books, including the best popular fiction and works on travel, history Mid other subjects., The work requ res a good deal or time. It is; feared. that no other lady outside; the Hospital will take it in hand. Miss Thurston, the matron, however, has kindly 1 promised to act as librarian, and Mrs Fountain asks the ladies of Chnstchurch to send books to the Hospital, in order that the patients may ; have opportunities to divert their attention from thear sufferings.
