READY FOR RETREAT.
GERMANS IN BELGIUM. (Received October 24, 2.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 23. The ''Daily News" Rotterdam correspondent aays that there arc very few Germans in Ostend or in the places recently captured in Flanders, as the enemy is throwing nil' his available force between Nieuport and Ypres. The latest reinforcements have been brought up with many cannon. Over one hundred Belgian railway engines are at Ostend and other places. ■ believed to be ready for a hasty retreat. SHOT DOWN AT VERDUN. (Received October 24, 3 p.m.) PARIS, October 23. Five hundred Germans were killed near Verdun. Anticipating a night attack, the French put empty tins at known distances from the trenches. The Germans, creeping up at night, rattled the tins and were shot down. . AUSTRIAN SUBMARINE SUNK. (Received October 24, 3 p.m.) ROME, October 23. The " Tribuna's" correspondent at Trieste states that the Nifa destroyed an Austrian submarine at Pola.
