A STREET DISPUTE.

METALLING PAPANDI ROAD. CITY COUNCIL CHARGES.

OBJECTIONS BY TRAMWAY BOARD.

At yesterday's meeting of tho Tramway Board a letter was received from tho City Council with reference to tho dispute between 'the Board and the Council over the cost of treating Papanui Road with tarred macadam, 'lhe letter stated that to put in tho macadam excavations had been necessary, and a soft clay bottom had been mot which had meant additional expenditure in further oxcavatiou to give the work a firm foundation- The lower cost quoted by the Tramway Board for work between the rails was explained by the fnct that- tho sleepers formed a go.-'d foundation. Tho chairman (Mr J. A. Flesher) explained that tho Council had quoted Is 8:1 per yard for four inches of tarred macadam when it had approached the Board, but the figures actually charged worked out at 3s Old por yard. There had been two indies more of tarred macadam put in than was nt first arranged.

Mr Gray said that he did ; not like the idea of the Board disagroeinc with another local body, but he did not think the Board should pnv the account of £1.45 from the Council. -The City Council had approached the Board and invited it £o co-operate in the work, and the Board had n.srrred to have a trial piece of work carried out on Papanui Road. The Council bad not treated the whole road as proposed, and the first account funnVhed to . the Board was over .11900. That had been reduced to £145. but the Board could do tho work for from Is 8d to Is 10d por square yard for four inches. The only thing for the Board to do was to carry ou + its own work in future. Mr TT. Pearco said that ho ouestioned the quotation of the City Surveyor at Is ftd when it was marie, and he doubted if the Board could lav four inches of tarred nvradnm at the price., In rprvly to th« Hon .T. Barr, it was sta + "d that the Council's work b"d bee 1 ! oarr'ed up to tho rails, but had not the £l-1-100 bptwpo-n thorn.

The chairman stn/Wl x hnt the Bird's works manager Ivd laid air pxr^'Tiental pi°ce of tprrr-d on +on Road, and th« cost had been Is 10d per souare vavd. Mr A. W.
