MOTHER'S CRUELTY.

[Per Press .Association.] INVERCARGILL, June 1.

Before Mr T. Hutchison, S.M., at Rivertoiij to-day, a married woman named Nellie M'Creath . was charged with, that bdng the mother and having the custody of Ghdvs M'Creath, aged four years'and a half, she did wilfully ill-treat the child in a manner likely to cause it unnecessary suffering. From evidence it appeared that on May 13 the attention of a constable, was directed to the child, and on examination ho found it a mass of bruises from head to heel, with some abrasions and marks about its face.. The little one was taken to a doctor, who upon examination described it as a shocking case. The woman was fined £lO and expenses, or in default two months' imprisonment, with hard labour, and the custody of the child was taken from her.
