DANGER SIGNALS.
PROVISION FOR CROSSINGS. A LATE REMEDY. For some time past the Railway Department has been- considering themeans of reducing the risk of accidents at level crossings, consequent'on a dominion wide complaint led by a northern Chamber of Commerce. One of the conclusions evidently drawn from the evidence, is that there should be bother warning signals than the present "■ Stop ! Look out for the Engine," that is placed en the railway lines. * A circular has now been issued to local bodies, including the City Council, offering'to provide danger signals. , Tho circular draws attention to a clause of the Act of 1913 compelling the drivers of, motor vehicles to slacken speed within 100 yds of a railway crossing, and states that, although there is no obligation on the Department'to do so, it has been decided to supply local bodies with distinctive- warning signs for erection on main roads about 150 yds or 200 yds distant from crossings.., This action has been decided on in viow.of the altered circumstances of road traction,, and the local bodies are invited to co-operate. It is also a condition of tho gift that the local bodies shall maintain the signnls.
The circular has been referred to a committee of the Council.
