ACCLIMATISATION.

MEETING OF THE SOCIETY. I. The Council of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society met last night; present—Mr W. H. Tisdall (chairman), | Dr C. M. Anderson, Professor T. G. R. Blunt and Messrs P. J. Williamson and H. M. Cotton. The Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs wrote asking for particulars of | the streams, rivers and lakes in the Society's district which were stocked I with trout, and also for a list of those I not yet stocked but considered suitable for the purpose. It was decided to supply all the information available. I The Lake Ellesmere Domain Board wrote with reference to the removal of the Society's hut at the Selwy'h, and stating that the license fee would be remitted for two years to recompense the 'Society for the expense incurred. j The Superintendent of Police advised the Society that at Little Raver on March 3 a. man had been fined £o and costs for taking forty-eight black swan and four pukeko eggs ..contrary to the provisions of the Animals Protection Act, 1908. I Mr Stead said the Society had al- [ ways contended that if the gathering of swan eggs were permitted pukeko 1 eggs would be taken also, and this case proved the truth'/of the contention. | The curator reported that, acting on ! instructions, he nad collected rainbow i yearlings for Temuka, but the niajorj ity had disappeared owing to a leak in the race. The decision to concrete the ( race would prevent any further loss. [The stock in the gardens was doing Well. A pair of squirrels had bred, and the young were now half grown. The chairman stated that the curator had reported the leakage in the race gome considerable time ago. The stock must have been suffocated. It was a big loss for the Society. The loss also fell seriously on the South Canterbury Society. It*had offered the Society the stock left free of cost. The total stock I put in the race was in the neighbourI hood of 20,000. t Mr Stead suggested that an effort f should be made to get fry from Lake I Lyndon. \ It was reported that at Warpara a [flock of at least twenty-five Canadian I geese had been seen, and that other i flocks are known to be in the neighbourhood. 1 Professor Blunt reported regarding the proposed olantation at Lake Lyn'don. It would be necessary to approach the lessees, Messrs Murray Bros., and also the Commissioner o'; Crown Lands. He would move that the incoming Council should be recommended to consider the matter. The motion was carried. r Accounts amounting to £2O 9s (k\ were passed for pavment. The month started with a credit, balance of £72 '9s 4d. and finished with a balance of !£l2 18s Id, with £450 in the savings , bank.
