W: Poynton, S.M., delivered an important decision. The ■ Awahuri School Committee granted the pupil an exemption certificate from attendance one, afternoon in the week to attend a music lesson eight miles away. The defendant argued that the music lesson constituted education and, eveu if not, music came under the clauso allowing the committee, to grant exemption for sickness, bad weather or other sufficient reason.

His Worship ruled that music did not come- under the category of "other sufficient reasons," and stated that tho school committee had exceeded its authority. As it was a. test case, tho minimum fine was imposed.
