Speaking to a number of farmers at to-day's poultry market, Mr J. 13. Merrett gave some interesting flames as to.the value of the poultry Industry in the dominion, and especia'.'y in Canterbury. According to the last census there had been in fire years an increase of half a million head of poultry, which laid 19,388,971 dozens of eggs annually, valued to producers at ■6989,448. The. table poultry was valued at £300,066, making in all a total of £1,269,514. The export of poultry and eggs by means of overseas shipping, and the Vancouver trade from Canterbury showed the possibilities of fhe poultry industry to farmers. During 1913, which, owing to the strike and smallpox scare, affected our exports considerably, we exported 22,893 head of poultry and 28,893 dozens of eggs, representing in value £5009 for poultry producers in Canterbury. " These figures, added to local consumption of eggs and poultry," said Mr Merrett, " show wliat an expansive trade the poultry business will yot become.
