JOHN KNEESHAW. (Received March 16. 9.-1,5 a.m.) SYDNEY, March 1(5. " The- death is announced, of Mr John itneeshawj .fifty-three years of age, iate Tramway Traffic Superintendent. - He A\-as educated at theChristchurch Boys' High 'School, and represented the Raiiway Department at ■ the Dunedin Exhibition in 1889. E.C ASHBY. On 'Saturdav afternoon Mr E. 0. Ashhv, of A'shbvy Bergh and On:, Ltd-Y and'one of the best-known business men in the city, died at his residence, after a brief illness, at the age of sixty-one years. The firm with which ho -was associated was established in 1860, and was

conducted from 1864. to 1890 by Mr Nashelski, when Mr Ashby, with the late Mr Ashbv Bergh took it over. Mr Ashby retired from the active managership in 1911. He was an enthusiastic swimmer and rowing man when younger, and was one of the first members of the Christchurch Swimming Club. . Bowling also attracted him, and he was one of the original members of the Canterbury Bowling Club, of which he was president in 1888 and 1900, and a lite member. With Messrs W. Savage, V. AY. Parsons, and B. Hale, he won tho rink championship of the South Island at Dunedin in 1890, but latterly he did not play bowls. He was for many years an active member of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and for twenty-five years was a member of the Christchurch Volunteer !• ae Brigade, holding the rank of foreman for a considerable time. •Mr Ashby was also one of the original members of the City Guards. Last year lie retired from the office of president of the Federal Club, after having held the honour for twelve years. He was not married. Messrs A. G. Ashby and W. J. Ashby, his brothers, are in Christchurch, and Mrs J. Norrie, a sister, is in Invercargill.
