Macassey was a passenger by the Wahine from Wellington to-day. Messrs M. B. Miller. S. C. Wilson and A. L. Smith .arrived from Dunedin to-day. Messrs K, E. Rtitter, J. E. Brodie and G. Robinson (Tapanui, Otago) arrived in Christchurch Inst night. A I/ondon message says that Mr Heiiry St beorge has been appointed Trinity College of Music examiner ill New Zealand for 1914. Mr C. E. Mtithews, Assistant Inspector of Prison?, arrived in Christchurch last evening. Ho 1 will leave for Wellington this evening. Lieutenant Morgan, Lieutenant. Green, "Major Gill and Major Cottrill of- No. : 8 Company, New Zealand Garrison Artillery, left- for Wellington last evening. A cable message from Ottawa states that Professor Prince has sailed for New Zealand, to organise the fisheries service at the request of the New. Zealand Government. Among the arrivals in the city this morning were Messrs W. H. Galway. (Auckland), AV. O. 31' Alpine, I;. B. Campbell and H. AVatkinson (Wellington) and A. Macfarlane (Coldstream). The Hon A. L. Herdman, Minister of Justice, arrived in Christchurcli from the south last evening. He will attend to departmental business in Christchurch to-day and will leave for AVellington this evening.
A movement is afoot at Ross to raise funds for tho -purpose of erecting a memorial to perpetuate l the memory of the late " Darby" Thomson, who recently lost his life on Mount Cook. - The deceased was .a ; native of Ross. The Hon A. L. Herdman, Minister of Justice, arrived in Christchurch last night, and will proceed to Wellington t-o-nifjht. This morning, accompanied by Mr C. R. Pollen, Commissioner of Crown Lands, the Minister proceeded to Templeton to inspect some land. , The Prime Minister, Mr Masse.v, arrived in Nelson from Haveloek yesterday afternoon and was tendered a civic reception, at which there was a large attendance. Mr Massev will be. in the district until Tussday when he will leave for tho AVest Coast. He will deliver a political address in Nelson on Monday night.
On the occasion of his retirement from active work after thirty-five years' service. Mr J. W. I'ointou. gaoler at Lyttelion, was met on Thursday evening by the gaol staff and presented with travelling portmanteau. In making the presentation, Chief Warder Kearney said that during M'r Pointon's long term of office lie was always found to be a strict disciplinarian, but nevertheless always remained on good terms with tho various staffs. Mrs Pointon was also presented with a purso of sovereigns as a. token of the esteem in which she was held by the gaol staff. Mr Pointon suitably replied. Mr J. O. Scanlon, of tho' Terrace Gaol, AVellington, has succeeded Mr Pointon.
