j CANTERBURY TOUR. ! SOUTHLAND ROUTED. (By Telegraph—-Special to ''Star.") INVERCARGILL. February 1.1. The display of the home team in the ! first innings was 'saved from being something in the nature of a debacle by the excellent partnership established between Poole and Groves. "With the total standing at 62 for seven wickets, the Southland skipper went to the crease. He at once commenced ft) hit merrily, and this gave his youthful partner confidence. 'Previously ho had been very chary about opening out, and played back balls which "he should have scored from. The partnership was not dissolved until the total had been increased by 36' runs, nil made by delightful cricket. The fielding of the Canterbury men was first-rlns<s .and a bright particular spot in it was the catching •of. Boalo, who accounted for five men in this way. Only two bowlers wove triad by the visitors, Wilson getting the splendid average of eight for 50, the two remaining wickets going to Bennett for 41 runs. The bow'img'was by no means difficult. After watching the display of the visiting batsmen, one is satisfied that th«> Southland men have yet a lot to learn. Their running between the wickets was an eye-opener, and it- was accomplished without taking undue risks. "Whitta was the only batsman to get going in the first innings. It was a treat to watch him in action. He gave only one difficult chance in a total of 27 runs, and it was unfortunate for him that he placed his leg in front when going strongly; The visitors' second day's display was much better, but such a big victory was not exo-ected. After knocking off the required runs thev gave an exhibition of batting, and put on 186. Hayes's innings of 84 was the- sparkling display of the afternoon, but there was more or less of the free and easy about it. However, the public fully appreciated the efforts. He had a sweet late cut which brought him a great many runs. . Thomas also scored rapidly, and soon rap up 85; including a huge smite for a sis'. Patrick, who opened with Beale, got to 37, but was more- careful than the others.

Canterbury won by ten wickets, scoring 173 and 25 for no wickets, while Southland's scores were : 100 and 97.
