SHORTAGE OF TRUCKS.
AN A'NNTML COMPLAINT. Duringjtlje past three weeks work at LyttHton has been very busy, and on Saturday a commercial record was established for tonnage. .With such a big influx,of ; vessels, more particularly those carrying . Newcastle • coal, it was only to be expected that the: annual outcry of shortage of trucks: would be soon, heard.- . For some days-.past the railway officials at Lyttelton have endeavoured to- keep operations going. by what, is known; as a hand to mouth existence:'' Again and : again various vessels have-had,to,cease:work at various periods of ••-'the day and; await 'the arrival of. a, fe'tv'empty trucks.. In many casesj "particularly 'wherev tramp steamers have been chartered, at a high figure, the.'cost to the shipping com-panies'is-considerable. ' The chief trouble is'believed' to be .at the Christ-church-station; One of the principal causes' of - : the" congestion is the fact, which was'pointed out ;by, the Ca,nal Commission -in', their report,, tha'twhilst Lyttelton works frequently//nearly twenty-four hours a day; Ghristchurch ■on the other hand, endeavours to keep pace by working about eight hours.
