KRUGER'S MAUSER DEAL

Richard Caton Woodrillc., the artist, in his reminiscences, relates that when painting the portrait of King Edward he asked liim if there would bo war in South Africa.
'' Nothing of the kind," said the King. " All is well. Tt will fiz/.le out. If war should break out fifty thousand men will go over the wholo of South Africa like the proverbial steam roller."
Woodville replied that it might not be quite so easy, considering that Kruger had bought sixty thousand Mausers and sufficient ammunition for two years, besides big guns and maxims.
King Edward was astonished at this information, and' sent it on to the War Office, where the. authorities for the first time learnt tho truth about Boer anna incuts.
Within throe months, the war broke out.
