ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.
" Doubles."—You __ wonder "if in consequence of the North Island horses not being able to oome down, the bookmakers will in fairness cry off the doubles that have been made in connection with the Riccarton races?" Surely you must have made a mistake. There are no bookmakers and no -doubles now-a-days. Perhaps you have not heard that book-making is illegal. It seems strange that your friend didn't tell you of that. If there were bookmakers and doubles, the bookmaker would probably not cry off. Double hackers would naturally bo his prey in the same way that a trout is naturally the prey of a black shag. Surely you would not deprive a man of his livelihood? " Lumper."-—Your letter is unwise, and wo should show greater unwisdom did we publish it. "Indignant."—The truth is hard to come by. A man must serve his time to every trade save consure; critics all a.re ready made.
