Iu connection with the fifth tournament for the season of the Wanganui Amateur Boxing Association last night, the chief item on the bill of fare was the professional contest between Denny Murphy, of Wellington, and R. Byrnes, of South Australia, for the welterweight championship and a'£7o purse, including £lO expenses for each man. The amateur bouts also excited consi d'erable interest. The two welterweights, A. Phillips (Wanganui) and R. Gray (Oliristchurch) appeared in the ring first, their fight lasting the four rounds. The first round was fairly even, but the second was in Gray's favour, and again in the third the Christchurch man appeared to have slightly the best of things. The last round was very willing, the Christchurch man going down for eight about half-way through. From then on Phillips had the best of the fight, and was declared the winner.

In the welter-weight championship both men stripped well, the New Zealand boy looking in the pink of condition, and the Australian nearly as well. The weights were announced as Murphy 106$lb, Byrnes 107|ll>, but Murphy's long reach madb up for any disadvantage m weight. Murphy hail the best of the bouts, and in the tenth and last round he landed a heavy left, followed by just as heavy a right, and down Byrnes went for eight. He was up again, but again the New Zealander's left caught him twice in succession, and the Australian went to the boards again. Ten was counted, and although he was on his feet again he was too late, and Murphy was awarded the 'fight.
