—— -<*" Captain Onslow arrived from Wellington this morning. Mr H. J. Beswick returned from Wellington this morning. Dr P. A. Ardagh. of Auckland, arrived in Christchurch this morning, Mr 11. Ritchie was a passenger by the Wahine from Wellington to-aay. Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P., arrived in Christchurch to-dny from Wellington. The Rev Bryan Brown was a passenger by the Wahine from Wellington today. Dr B. M. Moorhouso, who has been on a visit to England, has returned to Christchurch. Colonel G. C. B. Wolfe, inspector of rifle clubs, drill halls, and rifle ranges, has been taken seriously ill at To Aroha. Mr G. Femviek (Dunedin), R. Bell (Ashburton) and Mr E. G. Kerr (Timaru) arrived in Christchurch from the south last evening. Mr and Mrs Rosenthal (Melbourne), Messrs J. 0. Beer (London), L. W. Place (New York) and J. K. Boyd (Canada) arrived in Christchurch this morning.' Mdme Lilian Nordica. the dramatic soprano soloist, arrived in Auckland on Sunday from Sydney by tho Maheuo. The diva left on Monday to spend a few days at Rotorifa. Mr J. J. W. White lias been elected chairman of the Marlborough Education Board, in succession to Mr R. M.'Callum, M.P., who has been chairman for several years. Among tho arrivals in the city this morning were Messrs H. F. Lloyd, F. 11. Cooper, G. Stcwardson and T. J. Thurman (Wellington), O. M. Tibbittz (Auckland). P. W. Stewart (Spring Creek) and E. N. Borlase (Wanganui).
The death is reported of Mr James M'lnnes, who was Magistrate at Na,soli v for about ten years. Deceased, who was seventy-four years of age, retired about five or six yeans ago, and has since lived in Diuiedin. Ho was at one timo in the Police Force. and was subsequently clerk of tho Court at Tvumara.
A Stratford resident. Mrs F. Cuff (nee Hartley), according to the "Stratford Post/' has proved a claim against the celebrated Hartley estate, now in Chancery. It is stated that £4,000,000 has been recovered by Mrs Cuff, and that a further sum of £4,000,000 is to bo shortly released to her from Chancery. Mr "NVoburn Temple, Labour Departmental Architect, arrived in Christchurch from Wellington this morning to inspect tenders for seven dwellings in the Chancellor Street workers' dwellings settlement, North St Albans. Tenders were accepted this morning, and tho construction of the buildings will bo proceeded with at once.
Miss Maxine Elliott, the American actress in London, who refused to be carried off by negroes when playing T'otiphar in "Joseph and Ilis Brethren," is a sister-in-law of Sir .Johnstono Forbes-Robertson, and at the height of her career in New York was regarded as the most beautiful woman on the American stage. She married Nat C. Goodwin in 1596 and accompanied him to Australia in that year. Later she divorced him, and in 1903 she appeared as a ".star" in "Her Own Way." In 190S she opened her own theatre, the M axine Elliott, in New York, and a year or so ago she retired temporarily from the stage. She started in the theatrical profession as a penniless girl of sixteen with a younger sister dependent on her, and now she is the possessor of a comfortable fortune. As recently as July .she was contemplating permanent retirement from the stage, but she was induced to appear in Joseph and His Brethren," which Sir Herbert Tree is staging.
