The House of Representatives is rarely quite earnestly inclined for work on private members' days. It refused to take Mr Sidcy's Daylight Saving jiill seriously last night, though several supporters were keen enough in its advocacy, and everyone realised that this was the private members' last opportunity of the session. Several hours having been spent fruitlessly, the Prime Mini ter ; just about midnight, declared that alter his long experience be could see the House was not in a working mood. There was not the slightest chance of doing serious work without a change of programme. lie suggested reporting progress on all the private members' l!ills ; and devoting ail hour to local Bills. The longer we go," he declared, " the worse it will be. ' The e views were endorsed from the Opposition side l>v Mr Mucdonald, who advocated sending everyone home for a nnich needed sleep. The. enthusiasts forcer a division on the motion to report progress, and for various reasons they defeated it by 33 votes to 25. So the furco went on.
