THE PEARL NECKLACE.

OPENING OF THE PROSECUTION

THE NEGOTIATIONS iiy Telegiaph—PreßS Association—Copyright. (Received September 11, 8.41) a.m.) LONDON, September 10. Mr Muir, in opening the prosecution in tlio pear] necklace case, said that Gutwirth, when in London on August 4, asked a relative named Brundstatter if ho knew of a purchaser for articles worth £60,000. Brundstatter guessed that the necklace was meant, and, remembering the £IO,OOO reward, appeared to acquiesce. Ho consulted liia cousin Quadranstein, in Paris, as a suitable assistant in the negotiations. They wrote to Gutwirth, doubting whether the pearls were genuinely Mayer's and requesting proof. Gutwirth telegraphed to them to come to London at once. They met him and Silverman, and inspected three pearls. Brundistatted explained that Quadranstein represented his principal, and Silverman demanded £40,000. Later Grizzard and Lockett attended the negotiations. Brundstatter: and Quadranstein pretended to return to Paris, while Price induced Spanier, a reputable jeweller, to play the part of purchaser. Silverman and Grizzard met him at a hotel, as Maticn narrated, and produced tho pearls. Spanier bought two, anfl arranged a meeting at the Tube station on tho pretext that his principal, the Indian rajah, demanded an immediate bargain for the remainder, otherwise he would break off the negotiations. After tho arrest some of Spanier's bank notes were found on Silverman. Mr Muir added that Macartby's part was obscure. He complimented Quadranstein on conducting tho negotiations with admirable nerve and discretion.
