FREIGHT ON FLAX.

DEPUTATION TO THE PRIME MINISTER, 1 [Per Press Association ] WELLINGTON, May 16. A deputation of Manawatu flax l millers waited on the Prime Ministei and suggested that the Government should fix the maximum freights ou subsidised lines. It was stated that in a year the freight on flax to London had increased from 45s to 85s. . Mr Massey replied that the Government did not subsidise any lines trading to England. He hoped that it would never be necessary for the Government to com© to the assistance of the exporters, but if the time did come that they needed protection against tionat© charges, the Government would not shirk its duty. The present high freights were due to the increased cost of snips and the shortage of vessels to cope with the world's increased trade.
