OHRTSTCHURCH. Frxjdat, Mat 16. (Before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M.) Lio-ht and Speed.—For motor-cycling at night without having a light, George' Hayes was fined 5s and costs. — A similar fine was imposed in the case of Albert Sexton Mills, who rode a motor-cycle at an excessive gpeed round a comer at Sydenham. Motorists at Fault.—Thomas Anderson, Herbert Cooper, David Ellwood ana Steven Mangan were each fined Is and costs for motoring without having the numbers of their cars easily distinguishable, as now required by the by-laws. At Large.—Leo Gregory, for allowing a horse to wander at large, was fined 5s and costs. Personal Service. —Frederick Oswald Champness, for failing to render personal service under the Defence Act, was fined 10s and costs. Committed, tor Trial.—-A youth named Reginald Brown, alias Lewis, for whom Mr O. T. J. Alpers appeared, was charged with having stolen, on May 12, the sum of £45, the property of P. S. Nieholls and Co., and also with having forged a document, to wit, a. bank book, in a material part with the intention of having it acted upon as genuine. Detective-Sergeant D. Connelly, of Dunedin, gave evidence as to arresting accused at Dunedin. At first accused denied that he was the man wanted on the charge, but later, at the Police Station, admitted that he was Lewis. He also admitted having stolen money from P. S. Nicholls and Co., which he had been given to bank for the "firm. Accused produoed £36 3s sd, which he said was part of 'the" stolen' 'money. With the balance of the' money, he said, ho had bought clothes.. Accused had been charged and remanded to Christchurch. Norbert John Keene gave evidence as to the money given the accused to bank. The total was £7O lis 9d_. / The case was then adjourned till Wednesday nest, the same bail, £SO self and one surety of £SO, being allowed.
