FOOTBALL.

*.— CANTERBURY RUGBY UNION

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The committee of tho Canterbury Rugby Union mot last night; present: Messrs G. H. Mason (chairman), S. Wilson, C. Evans, F. D. Kesteven, C. Buchanan, A. E. Byrne, A. L. Jones, L. Corbett, A. M'Phail, C. Hasell, F. T. Evans, and C. W. Hervey (secretary). A motion of sympathy with Mr W. Walton in tho death of his wife was carried in silence.

Mr F. D. Kesteven, on behalf of the members of the executive, congratulated Mr Mason on his appointment to the Presidency of the New Zealand Rugby Union. It was an honour to the provineo and to tho individual who had dono much for the game in New Zealand, and was still one of its most active supporters.

Mr C. Buchanan also congratulated the president on his appointment and thanked Mr Mason for his lively interest in the game locally, and the early efforts by which he had saved the Old Boys' Club from dropping out. The .chairman thanked tho members for their congratulations and said that if he was proud to hold the office on behalf of the province he was still more proud on behalf of his colleagues. Reporting on the recent conference Mr Mason expressed satisfaction at the kindly feeling exhibited towards Canterbury at the conference, and very favourable dates had been accorded to Canterbury matches this year. In that connection he wished to say that the North v. South match had not gone begging as there were several unions quite eager to take the match, but they had deferred to Canterbury on the ground that the match would greatly help the province in its effort to clear the debt off Lancaster Park. The West Coast was anxious for a match this year and he thought that a team should be sent over as the game was picking up a good deal on tho coast. Mr Evans also reported on the conremarking that he had been disappointed with the half-hearted nature of the proceedings, and he hoped that the advent of Mr Mason to the presidency would supply the firm hand that had been lacking. A very unsatisfactory letter had been read from the English Union in reply to the question whether the executive of a union should have power to deal with offenders on the field who were not observed or dealt with by the referee. The letter deprecated the practice except in extreme cases, and it appeared therefore that local unions would have to be careful in dealing; with cases of the kind, for there might be a good case for appeal. The referee in the Sydenham-Christ-church match on Saturday recommended that no. further Senior games should be played on the ground where Sydenham was playing, as the encroachment on the ground and the small boy nuisance had caused frequent stoppages. The matter was left in the hands of the Competitions Committee. The Wairarapa Olub wrote confirming August 30 for its Canterbury match.

The Canterbury College Club wrote withdrawing its President's B team from the competition on the ground that fifteen players were incapacitated from injuries. The club asked permission to play its B members in the A team. The request was granted.

The Cheviot Club wrote asking for a match at Mackenzie with a Junior town team. It was decided to inform the club that an endeavour was being made to play a oombined team 3 probably at Cheviot; but that the club might arrange, a match privately if a town team had a bye. The High School Old Boys' Club wrote asking for permission to enter a. second President's Cup team to fulfill the> engagements of the Jiinwood Club, which had withdrawn. The Competitions' Committee recommended the granting of permission provided a decision could be come to on points. The request was granted as from Saturday week, on the understanding that the Permit Committee must be satisfied with the status of players.

The "Wairewa Club wrote asking for a match at Little River with a Junior team on May 31. It was decided to get an estimate of the cost. The Ashburton Sub-unipn wrote suggesting a monetary contribution to the Sub-union, instead of incurring the expense of sending two teams. A grant of £lO was passed. ' REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES. CANTERBURY TEAM'S FIXTURES. Christchurch will be very well served this year in the matter of representative "football matches which will include the annual North v. South Island match.

A football match was played at Lisrnore. on Saturday between teams representing the Mayfield and Lisrnore clubs, when the latter won by 6 points to 3. Tries were scored for Lisrnore by A. Lister and C. Williams, and for Mayfield by H. Hawke. Mr E. G. Whiting was referee.
