THE NEW HEBRIDES.
—, —-*—, — THE CONDOMINIUM By Telegraph.—Press (Received May 14, 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 14.
The Presbyterian Assembly carried a resolution expressing regret at the continuance of abuses in the New Hebrides under the condominium, and asking the Australian and Imperial Governments to take steps to stop these injustices. The speakers reiterated the charges against the Freneh settlers of selling liquor to natives, of wholesale kidnapping, of heating almost to death, and of selling natives to one another. The French Government, it was suid, did not make its subjects keep the law, and no matter what decision the Joint Commission may give it can only be enforced by the Government officials of the offending party.
The Rev F. Paton declared that the condominium was rotten through and through, and it was a disgrace to Britain to have anything to do with. it. Years ago missionaries could leave their wives on the islands and they were safe, but since the French settlers sold grog to the natives white women were no longer safe.
