COUNTY COUNCILS.

OXFORD. The Oxford County Council met on Tuesday; present—Messrs H. Campbell (chairman), A. Baxter, H. T. Cooper, J. Cross, A. Meyers, J. M'Cormack and J. "Wells. The clerk reported that the balance-sheet lor the year showed a debit balance of £285 Os 7d. The surveyor was instructed to have all roads cleared of gorse, and to ereot two or three more finger-posts. The foreman made a report of works carried out during tho past month. Notice of motion to strike a general rate at the next meeting was given by Mr M'Cormack. A deputation from West Oxford waited on tlie Council regarding a waterrace from Gammans Creek for the Terrace. It was arranged for the surveyor to make an estimate of the cost. The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board gave notice of a levy for the year ending March 31. 1914, of £529 3s 9d. A letter was roceiml from the Rangiora Borough Council regarding the entertainment of the crew of the New Zealand, and it was resolved to contribute £5. It was resolved to apply for a grant for a concrete bridge over the View Hill Creek at Bexley, and to ask for an explanation of'the unnecessary expense and delay in surveying old roads into Lees' Valley that have proved failures in the past, while the route via the Ashley Gorge (which is much shorter and will he more easily maintained), recommended by the late Road Board, and approved by the engineer-in-chief, and of which five and a half miles have been completed at a cost of £2OOO, is being hung up. It was resolved to cancel contract No., 17 for shingling the Rockford Road, on account of the weather having broken. Accounts amounting to £290 18s lid were passed for payment. CHEVIOT. monthly meeting of the I Cheviot County Council was held on Saturday, May 10; present—Messrs T. G. Gee (chairman), T. Stevenson, J. H. B. Oliver and T. Meikle. The Treasury reported payment of £2OO on account of the Downs Road grant. The Cheviot Public Library applied for a subsidy on subscriptions amounting to £ls 7s 6d. A subsidy of 10s in the pound was granted. Mrs A. Geeson wrote asking if the drain in front of her property on Hurunni Road could be widened. The clerk and Mr Meikle were appointed to inspect the locality. The Public Works Department wrote requesting that applications • for any grants should be sent in as soon as possible. It was decided to apply for grants for a bridge at M'Gilivray's Road, for shingling. at Parnassus and for re-opening Ufchelton Road. The Public Trustee wrote with reference to' clearing gorse on a section in M'Queen Street that he would endeavour to comply with the requirements of the Council. The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board's levy for the year amounted to £594 lis 3d. a decrease of £7 17s on last year. It was decided to pay the amount in monthly instalments. The clerk was instructed to write to the Valuation Department to ascertain when the" rolls would be ready for the purpose of rating. Mr.D. O'Connor waited on the Council asking for a stock bridge on Fox Street to give Mm access to his property. It was decided to erect the bridge, provided the Domain Board allowed a right-of-way from the road terminus to Mr O'Connor's section. • Mr S. Solomon waited on the Council to ask if he could erect a store on an unused portion of the road at Parnassus. It was resolved to ascertain whether the land was a road- or had been resumed by the Publio "Works_ Department. It was decided to shingle the west cutting at Port Robinson.
