fy . The Hon W. H. Ferries, Minister of Railways, left Christehurch this morning for" the West Coast. He will inspect branch lines on the way to Otira, and he will also visit the tunnel works. From Otira he will make a comprehensive tour of the West Coast railways, visiting, also, some of the State mines. Ho will return to Christchurch next Friday evening, in time, to attend the citizens' ball in honour of H.M.S. Now Zealand.
On Saturday night, at a meeting of the Typographical Union, a presentation was made by Mr J. Petterd, on behalf of the New Zealand Typographical Federation, to Mr T. W. Chappell, the secretary of the Federation. In making the presentation, Mr Pettera spoke of the excellent manner in which Mr Chappell had carried out the duties devolving on him in connection with the recent dominion award, and asked him to accept a token of the appreciation of the affiliated Unions, which took the form of a gold watch and albert, suitably inscribed. He also asked Mr Chapnell to accept a gold bangle for Mrs Chappell. Mr Chappell suitably retunvxl thanks to the Federation for its gift.
