Sir .James Carroll, who has been seriously ill, is making satisfactory pi ogress towards recovery. The employees of Mr \Y. J. "Walter met at his residence. Marshland, on Monday evening and presented him with a. Gladstone travelling-bag. Mr A. T. Fuller, in making the presentation, wished him a very pleasant trip to England" and a safe return. Mr W. J. \Y alter was made the recipient of a brief-bag, suitably inscribed, by the Marshland Hall Committee on the eve of his departure for jihigland. Mr T. Morton, chairman of the committee, in making the presentation. referred to the valuable services rendered by Mr "Walter as promoter, secretary and treasurer, and wished him bon voyage. At the annual meeting of householders of the Sumner school district- on Monday evening, when nominations of candidates were being received, Mr E. G. Wood, the retiring chairman of the outgoing committee, declined nomination, although strongly pressed by the meeting to reconsider his decision, staling that that night closed a record of twenty-five years' service as a school committeeman, eight at Sumner and seventeen at Opnwa. He also said that lie had always taken a keen interest m educational, matters, and had tried to do his best in their furtherance. A motion specially thanking Mr Wood for his past scrricjs was passed.
