FOURTH ANNUAL FESTIVAL.

There was only ono class set down for decision at this afternoon's session of the Christchurch Musical and Literary Society's annual competitions, that of vocal duet for lady and gentleman.. Thero was a fair attendance.

VOCAL DUET (Lady a,nd Gentleman). " Still as the Night " (Gotze). Four compkitors. The test selection iv&s a beautiful one, and needed a groat deal of stud>y. The first competitors, Mrs A. Price and Mr H. Worth ington (Christchurch), were uncertain in places, the baritone being not sure of the time. Mrs Price sang- nccuraiely. Miss May Walton and Mr F. Taylor (Dunedin) gave a good rendering. The opening was a little weak, but they improved considerably as they went along, and the concluding passage- was well sun,?. Miss Marjorie Saunders and Mr H. K. Harre (Christchurch) aJso showed improvement as they went. along. There was an absence of light and shacte in the rendering given by Miss Claris Holgate (Christchurch) and ?.£r Clifford Toon (St Albans), the niano passages not being anite soft enough. The baritone voice was a little cloudy. The judge expressed regret that some of the competitors had withdrawn. He recalled Miss May Walton and Mr F. Taylor (Dunedin), Miss Marjorie Sannders and Mr H. K. Harro ("Christchurch), and Miss Claris Holgate and Mr C. Toon (Christchurch). Mrs A, Price and Mr H. Wortliington were given " honourable mention " with 77 marks.
