CITY COUNCIL.
LAST MEETING OF THE YEAR. TJiq ..Ghristchurch. City . met last night for the final meeting prior to the election of Mayor and Councillors; Mayor (Mr H. Holland) and Councillors "W. H. Cooper, H. D. Acland, A. Williams, H. B. Sorensen, H. Hunter, J. M'Cullough, W. Millar, F. Burgoyne, A. S. Taylor, H. J: OtJey and W. R, Smith. The Abattoir Committee reported that the Drainage Board had declined to allow the abattoir sewage to be agaiin discharged into the Lincoln Road sewer. It was proposed to construct carriers of concrete at such a level as to command the paddocks and with sufficient fall to prevent any portion of the liquid lying stagnant at any time either in the carriers or in the paddocks. The covering on the top of the septic tank would also have a direct influence in preventing a nuisance. The report was adopted. The Works and Sanitary Committee reported that after having the samples of disinfectants submitted to a bacteriological examination it recommended the acceptance of the following ten-ders-.—Fluid, " Kerol," Dalgety and Co., at 4s 'lid per gallon; powder, "Eclipse," Ashby, Bergh and Co., at 12s 6d per cwt. The Wellington Gas Company had offered to supply tar at 4Jd per gallon f.0.b., Wellington, and the city surveyor had been authorised to procure as much as possible. An industrial dispute has arisen between the Canterbury Builders and General Labourers, Quarry Workers, Wool and Grain Store Employees Industrial Union of Workers and the employers. The minimum rates of wages claimed were as follows: —Quarry workers, Is 4Jd per hour; powder men, not less than 12s per day; general labourers, Is 3d per hour. The committee recommended that no action should be taken. The Council was recommended to permit building in Alexandra Street and Draper Street without insisting that the building line should be set back. The report was adopted.
Mr C. R. N. Mackie, secretary to the Peace Council, wrote stating that he proposed to speak in Cathedral Square on Thursday and Saturday evenings. He also applied for permission to speak on the Victoria square band rotunda on May 18, between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Permission was granted on the usual conditions.
