TO SOLVE UNEMPLOYMENT. THREATENED TRANSPORT STRIKE. United Press Association—By Electric Telegmph—Copyright. LONDON, February 3. The transport organisations are planning a strike in the summer, at the expiry of existing agreements. The primary object is to solve unemployment before the next wave of industrial depression by means of an allround reduction of hours. The seamen claim an increased manning scale in all vessels. Transport workers ashore claim an eight hours day.
SOUTH CANTERBURY THRESHING
MILL OWNERS. [Fkom Our Correspondent.] TIMARU, February 3. A meeting of mill owners is to be called to-morrow to decide what rates of pay will be paid for threshing. It is stated that at the last meeting, ■which was declared informal, owing to the requisite notice not having been t£iven, it was decided by a majority of two votes to adhere to the contract »ystem, but it is now rumoured in Timaru that this decision is likely to be reversed, and that the mill owners will Xgrce to pay by the hour.
