THE WEATHER.

Rain watt reported from .several parts of the Auckland province thin morning, but no communication was received from stations north of Manakau. Ruin was also reported from Taranaki and Hawke's Bay, ajid the seas all round the North Island were rough. In the South Island conditions were more pleasant. The only parts outside Canterbury from which rain was reported were Bealey, where snow has fallen, and at Nuggets, where a lew passing showers were recorded. The sens round the coast were heavy. An earthquake shock was experienced at Queenstown shortly after six o'clock this morning. The rainfall in Christchurch for the twenty-four hours ending niijo o'clock this morning amounted to 1.965 in.

, A violent thunderstorm sprang up here yesterday evening, with intensely vivid ' lightning and very heavy peals of thunder, accompanied with tropical rain, which continued" all f night. To-, day 'tho weather is unsettled, with frequent showers. Tho cocksfoot harvest will bo stopped for a day or so. The sen is verv rough. [From Our Correspondent.] METHVEN, January 28. After a long spell of hot, dry weather, a decided change took place on Sunday afternoon, a cold southwest wind coming up with huge banks of clouds. Little or no rain fell, but the night was very cold, 0110 degree of frost being registered. Monday was fine until tho afternoon, when the ram came down in torrents, and this moining the hills are covered with a, coating of snow. Altogether over two inches of rain have fallen during the past week. This will have a beneficial effect upon all the root crops and lato cereals. Early crops of both oats and wheat are too far gone.to derivo any benefit. [Per Press Association.] FEILDING, January 28. The long spell of dry weather broke yesterday, when there were heavy rain and a thunderstorm in the afternoon. Lightning set fire to some pine needles 011 a property near town and the flames spread along the grass, but were extinguished before any damage was done. A heavy gale raged during the night and a soaking rain continues to-day, which will do much good to pastures and turnips and rape crops.
