CANTERBURY COLLEGE.
BOARD OF GOVERNORS. The Canterbury College Board of Governors met yesterday; present—Mr J. d. Adams (chairman), Bishop Grimes, Messrs L. B. Wood, C. H. Opie, W. Brock, J. L. Scott; G. Rennie, H. D. Acland S. Hurst Seager, T. W! Adams, W. H. Montgomery, W. Izard and T. Hughes. Dr Lester was appointed a member of the Museum and Library Committee. The chairman reported that the subcommittee appointed to accept tenders had accepted the tender' of Messrs Nightingale Bros, for additions to the Girls' High School, £4691, and of Mr H. Pearco for additions to the Boys' High School, £4654. The chairman, Messrs J. L. Scott and S. Hurst Seager were appointed a Building Committee to supervise details in connection with all buildings for the Board now in coarse of erection.
The Council of Trinity College, Cambridge, wrote to the Board stating that its agreement with the Board with reference .to exhibitions'would not be continued after 1913. The success of the agreement had led the Council to make a wider offer, and a new arrangement had been made. It would mean that exhibitions would' be ed to candidates from any o* the colonial colleges. The terms set out that one 01* more exhibitions would be offered for competition among the nominated students. The exhibition would have an annual value of £4O, which could be increased by remission of college fees to £75 in cases of special need. They would be tenable during two years from the commencement of residence and might be prolonged for a third year. Applications should reach the Council before March 1, 1913.
The chairman remarked that the new arrangement would mean a loss to Canterbury College, which previously had enjoyed the advantage of a close exhibition. He had replied to the Council stating that under the present circumstances It would be impossible to nominate a candidate from Canterbury College by March 1. He had suggested that in view of the conditions the College laid down under its previous arrangement, which were still being followed, the Council should accept a nomination from the Board later than that date. In his reply ho had asked for enlightenment on certain points of the conditions under which the exhibition was offered. It was not clear whether the term "colonial" was meant to apply to New Zealand only or to Australia, Canada and other portions of the Empire, and the clause was that which set out that the nomination should bo through the principal authority of the University. In New Zealand there were four University colleges affiliated to the University of New Zealand. The principal authority of the University was the Chancellor and of the colleges the chairmen of the various Boards. It was uncertain as to which authority wa3 to be recognised in connection with nominations from New Zealand.
The letter from Trinity College was received.
The College Committee recommended the Board to grant £IOO for the purpose of a scholarship to be established at the Royal Hollcway College, England, for a female student of Canterbury College, provided that the conditions attached to the scholarship were acceptable to the Board; that a scholarship, at Trinity College, Cambridge, for one year, equivalent to £IOO, shoxild be awarded to Mr H. D. Broadhead, to enablo hi in to continue his studies at Cambridge for a third year, and that in future the appointments of lecturers and demonstrators, which had hitherto been made from year to ?efsr, should be made for lho session only.
