—♦ —•— ■ ■ ■ ■ REPAIRS TO THE RAILWAY. AN ENERGETIC STAFF. [From Our Correspondent.] ASHBURTON, October 31. A staff of men, under Mr E. M'Sherry, inspector of the permanent way, left Ashburton by a relief train for Ealing Inst evening, and these, with the men available at Ealing and Rangitata, accomplished a great work during the night in repairing the serious damage caused to the railway line in the Ealing-Rangitata cutting by the deluge of rain which followed the cloudburst in the afternoon. There .must have been hundreds of tons of shingle to shovel back and pack down, and at ton o'clock last night it looked almost impossible that the damage could be repaired within .twenty-four hours, yet Mr M'Sherry and his staff had the lino ready for a heavy train to pass over slowly by .5.30 this morning. Tbe' men must have worked like Trojans, and tho manner in which they accomplished their task entitles them to the highest credit. A long train of express carriages wa,s brought over, and it passed tlirough Ashburton at 7.15. Mr M'Sherry and his staff of willing workers returned by the train.
